In vitro fertilization versus ICSI: What is the difference?
Among the fertility treatments classified as highly complex, there are In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The key difference between IVF and ICSI is how the sperm fertilizes the egg. In IVF, the egg and sperm are left in a Petri dish to fertilize on their own. In ICSI, a sperm is injected directly into the egg. Both processes require preparation with hormones, follow-up by the fertility specialist and finally egg retrieval under anesthesia and in the operating room of the reproduction laboratory.
It is important not to confuse these treatments with Intrauterine Insemination (IUI); the process by which sperm are instilled into a woman’s uterus at the time of ovulation induced by fertility treatment. Although IUI has lower success rates than IVF and ICSI, it is a procedure classified as low complexity, less expensive and performed in the office without anesthesia.
